I am an Armenian artist who delves into the ideas of sacred spaces, care, and the relationship between the body, migration, and mark making. These ideas inform my paintings, which are abstract compositions that invite you to step into them, and experience a personal moment of the sacred. Care as a specific language in painting, surface creation, and medium is fascination for me, delving into surface manipulation and material play. This idea of care returns back to the forms I reference, Armenian cathedrals, migratory paths of birds, and the relationship those forms have against, with, and beside each other. Through a language that blends abstraction and figuration in painting and ceramics, I seek to embody the tactility of care and the presence of history. My work acts as a form of mapping, tracing the invisible threads that connect us to each other, to our pasts, and to the spaces we inhabit.

Demi Sedrakyan is in their last year of a BFA at SAIC, and is working between Chicago and Los Angeles.
